A vital element of Finstaship's fleet management is the Integrated Safety System (ISM). Company's every ship has to be able to access documents in the ISM system when sailing the world's oceans. Since the documents are about safety, it is crucial for the management in the headquarters to know that each safety representative has received every new or updated document. The new document management system not only stores the files, but also keeps track of who has accessed them.
Finstaship already had an extranet that provided ship personnel access to the relevant information. The extranet applications were created in PHP programming language. The project team chose PHP and CakePHP framework for system implementation in order to take advantage of the MVC design pattern.
