Luvata factory in Pori needed a single shared database for its superconductor measurement reports. A pre-study carried out earlier had concluded that an IT system built on a relational SQL database was required. In order to easily share the information captured into the database among other business divisions, Luvata decided to design the system for Web browser user interface.
BF Engineering implemented a demo of what the final system could look like in a Web browser. This approach proved to be valuable, because major features were dropped from the final design and others added based on the demo system.
Open source solutions were in the key position during the software development. The database was designed in a way that it could be implemented in SQL from any vendor with minor changes.
The application itself was programmed with the Ruby on Rails framework for web development. With Ruby on Rails scaling and maintanance are easy and it also enables quick development of new features.
